Choanji Temple

Built in 1658, Choanji Temple is known as a place that people come to for advice. The temple is famous for its 500 gohyaku rakan statues. Gohyaku rakan is the term for the 500 Buddhist monks who were the students of Buddha that collected the sutras after his death. If you take a walk around the mountain behind the temple, you’ll see the statues of these monks. Each monk statues has its own facial expression, so no two are exactly alike. In spring and autumn, the statues are surrounded by greenery and the colorful autumn foliage respectively, and emanate a different kind of serenity and beauty. From the end of October to the beginning of November, the pampas grass in the nearby Sengokuhara pampas fields has grown tall and attracts many visitors.
