This site was originally inspection facility during the Edo Period (1603-1868), built to help keep the city of Edo (former name for Tokyo) safe. It was considered the checkpoint for all parts of Japan. There were as many as 50 different checkpoints in the country during this time, but they were all abandoned when the Edo Period ended. The Hakone Checkpoint is the only checkpoint of that period which has been restored to its original state. In 2007, the facility was rennovated using the techniques and tools from the late-Edo Period. The six meter-high kyoguchi gomon gates are impressive. A climb to toomi bansho, the cabin used for guarding the facility, offers a beautiful view both Lake Ashi and Mt. Fuji.
