Kyukaido ishidatami (Old Tokaido Highway) is a road that was built and managed by the government as the "official road" during the Edo Period (1603-1868). It was formerly used as a road that connected Tokyo with Kyoto (Tokaido), and it was known as a difficult road with many steep slopes. It is said that it got paved because the mud that once covered it was shin-high. If you decide to explore Ishidatami, preserved and tended to today and take a walk from Hatajuku to Ashinoko under more than 400 grandiose trees along the road, you might be able to understand the hardships travelers had to endure during those times.
