Traversing the mountainside, Hakone Tozan Railway is one of Japan's few mountain railways. Passengers can enjoy scenery of every season through the window and be wowed as the train climbs steep slopes. The cable car connecting Gora and Sounzan climbs an altitude of 209 meters.

Climbing up steep climbs ‘Switchback’

Hydrangea train

Hydrangea along the railway bloom around mid-June. At this time the hydrangea is in bloom the Hakone Tozan Railway is affectionately named the “Hydrangea Railway”.

Cable car powering up steep inclines

In journeying to Owakudani from Odawara, passengers transfer at Gora Station from the Tozan Railway to the cable car. The cable car powerfully climbs steep inclines to Sounzan Station, a transfer point to the ropeway to Owakudani.

About fare tickets

Q. Can IC chip cards be used?: A.

IC chip cards can be used on the Tozan Railway but not on the cable car.
Q. Can I purchase a ticket or Hakone Freepass with a credit card?: A.

Credit cards can be used at the ticket office at Hakone-Yumoto Station or Gora Station.
Q. Can I get a refund for an unneeded ticket?: A.

In the case a customer would like to cancel use, a refund can be given for the following ticket types:
(1) Normal tickets/Special tickets (Hakone Freepass/Hakone Tozan Train 1-Day Pass, etc.)
Restricted to unused tickets, a refund is given of the sale price minus a nominated charge.
(2) Ticket sets
Refund is given minus the normal passenger fare for the number of used tickets and a charge of 220 yen.
(3) Commuter ticket
Refund is given minus the commuter fare for the duration passed calculated by month and a charge of 220 yen.
Please bring an official proof of ID, etc., for ID confirmation.
※ If the duration is less than one month, it will be calculated as one month.
※ Restricted to commuter tickets 7 days or less have passed including the start date of the validation period, a refund is given minus the normal return fare for the number of days passed and a charge of 220 yen.

Q. What is the switchback method?: A.

There are steep climbs so the train climbs by going back and forward in a zigzag pattern. This is called Switchback.

Q. Can motor coaches stop at Sounzan Station?: A.

Pick-up and drop-off is possible. Parking is not allowed.
Q. Is the tour conductor counted in the number of persons?: A.

Tour conductors and guides are included in the number of passengers.
Q. In the case of a lost article in the station or platform, who should I contact?: A.

Q. Can pets be brought on board?: A.

When bringing small animals such as small dogs/cats/birds, etc., put them in a dedicated case which can fit their entire body and make sure there is no harm or nuisance to other passengers. ※Dedicated case should be 70 cm long or less, smallest cube of total length, width and height should be less than 90 cm approx. in total and 10 kg or less in weight including the pet.
Q. Do you loan wheelchairs?: A.

Yes. They can be rented at Hakone-Yumoto Station, Gora Station and Sounzan Station.
Q. Can bicycles be brought onto the train?: A.

If they are dismantled and stored in a dedicated bag, they can be brought onto the train. However, in busy periods, etc., this might be refused.
